British Britannia Tenth Ounce £10 Gold Coin
The 1/10oz Britannia £10 Coin
When The Royal Mint first struck its incredibly popular gold Britannia series in 1987 it did so in four initial denominations. The most fractional of these is the 1/10oz example, making it the ideal entry point into the Britannia range for many investors and collectors. The Tenth Britannia, no longer the most fractional in the range following 2013's 1/20oz release, enjoys the security and quality reliably present across the series.
Investors looking to obtain specific amounts of gold for their portfolios, or those with less space to store their precious metals, tend to turn to the 1/10oz Britannia for their answer. This original member of the Britannia series is also treasured in thanks to the impressive level of detail present across its 16.50 millimetre diameter. The Royal Mint gives no less attention to detail on fractional examples such as these which, of course, can help with value on the gold buying market.

Tenth Ounce Britannia: Coin Specification
Being a denomination minted since 1987, the 1/10oz Britannia underwent the specification shift in 2013. Examples previously matched the Sovereign series through a 22ct gold composition, however the gold Britannia has been struck in .999 fine gold (24ct) since 2013.
It is this change in alloy that means 2012 and previous versions hold a 3.41 gram gross weight, whereas the 24ct mintages weigh in at 3.11 grams. Our in-house coinage experts will confirm the specifications of your coin prior to sale, and ensure any questions you may have are answered throughout. While the gold amount remains the same - each holds 1/10 troy ounce of gold - this is useful information to know, as it is best to be wary of gold dealers who try to paint the 22ct examples in a lower value picture.
Overall, we like to think the 1/10oz example perhaps best sums up the storied history of Britannia and the nation she represents: small, but mighty!
Britannia's Heritage And Design
The Romans quickly came to understand their fierce island province, far to the west. With no shortage of warfare and water found in and around their province the emergence of Britannia, based on the Roman deities such as Athena and Poseidon, as a female personification of Britain emerged.
In later years she became a figurehead for the British Empire, representing the Empire's rule over the waves. The warrior goddess, with strong ties back to Roman superiority and strength is a popular subject for coinage designs, adorning many from the definitive 50p and £2 over the years. The Britannia gold coin series is however her finest representation from The Royal Mint.
Numerous reverse designs have been used over the years, some more limited than others. The most common £10 Britannia design is that by Philip Nathan. Here, majestically occupying the coastline with trident, laurel, and olive branch grasped stands Britannia wearing her Corinthian helmet. The intricacy and regality of the design has cemented it as a firm favourite among UK coin enthusiasts.
The obverse side of the gold Britannia is complimentary in bearing the ruling monarch in their definitive effigy of its year. This is most likely to be Elizabeth II, although Charles III examples are entering the market at increasing rates.
