1/4oz American Eagle Specification
The 'quarter ounce' refers not to the overall weight of this American Eagle coin, but instead outlines the intrinsic gold content in troy ounces. The coin itself weighs a little more, thanks to the use of 22ct gold (the same gold alloy with which the UK Sovereign is produced) in striking this coin.
The result is a bullion coin composed of 91.67% pure gold. As a rule for American Eagles, the remainder of the coin is made from 3% silver and 5.33% copper. The result is a 1/4oz gold coin that holds precious metal value and impressive resistance to wear.
A face value of $10 is given to the coin to make it legal tender and theoretically exchangeable. This is a nominal figure: the intrinsic value of the 0.25 troy ounce of gold inside is far higher! Instead, most examples of the Quarter Eagle will be valued against the 0.25 troy ounce of gold.
Our live prices for the proof-like bullion standard edition of this coin are available at a glance on our website. We display live, upfront pricing to help sellers feel informed and avoid uncertainty about hidden fees.

Design Variation Of The Quarter Eagle
While only one obverse design has featured on the American Eagle—that being a standing Lady Liberty—the reverse has seen two variations since its 1986 introduction. The first, depicting a swooping eagle, is the most common and was used until 2021. However, in 2021, the baton was passed to Jennie Norris, and her stern side portrait now occupies the golden canvas of the Quarter American Eagle.
As the gold value remains the same, we will not pay any less for one design than the other.

Gold Traders is pleased to have operated in the public trust since 2008. We understand that selling a treasured collection or long-built gold investment comes with hurdles, such as receiving a fair valuation in relation to spot, having your buyer recognise additional collectable value, and avoiding the dreaded hidden fee.
We believe our gold dealing process produces the best and fairest outcomes for those looking to part with their gold in exchange for its cash value. That is why we display independent reviews on our site and on Trustpilot. In 2022, we invited Trading Standards to inspect our way of business, resulting in Gold Traders becoming the first UK dealer to obtain national approval under the 'Buy With Confidence' scheme.
