Specification Of Half American Eagle Coin
The American Eagle range is minted in 22ct alloyed gold, resulting in a coin which is 91.6% pure gold in composition. Experienced investors will know this is the same purity found in the much-loved UK Sovereign. The remaining makeup is allotted to silver and copper at 3% and 5.33% respectively.
Being the Half American Eagle this coin holds 50% of the gold value of the standard Eagle, meaning 0.500 troy ounce of the precious metal is found in each example. The coin is therefore slightly smaller in profile, with a 27.00 millimetre diameter (a measurement roughly comparable to the UK 50p). The American Eagle Half holds a face value of $25, which is not an indication of true worth as much as it functions to tie Eagles into the USA legal tender system.
The majority of 1/2oz American Eagles are minted to bullion quality and are intended mainly to circulate investment portfolios and the bullion market. However, some examples - often bearing the 'W' mint mark - are proof quality. These are collectable pieces originating from New York's West Point Mint and can occasionally hold additional value on top of the intrinsic gold content.
For pure bullion examples, valued against their 1/2 troy ounce of gold, you can view our live prices right now for an indication of what you will receive. Remember, no hidden fees will be added to the buy price you see and if the value rises before your sale goes through we will pay you the higher figure!
Common Designs Of The $25 Eagle
Over the decades since its release, two eagle-themed designs have nested on the reverse of these coins. The most common, employed from 1986 - 2021, depicts an eagle with wings outstretched grasping an olive branch for an eaglet below. In 2021, Miley Busiek's design was rotated out, making way for the intricate 'eagle eye' design credited to Jennie Norris.
This design shift was however a purely cosmetic change; the intrinsic gold content, and therefore bullion value, of the Half American Eagle is not altered across these pivotal mintage years.
