1 Ounce American Eagle: Specification
Minted in America-sourced 22ct gold alloy of 91.6% purity, these coins each hold 1.00 troy ounce of pure gold. As a rule, the remaining alloy is composed of 3% silver and 5.33% copper. The 1oz Eagle coin has a 32.70 millimetre diameter and a face value of $50, although the intrinsic value is of course much higher.
The majority of 1oz American Eagle coins are minted for the bullion market, therefore holding a prooflike bullion finish. However, with minor exceptions in the late 00's and early teens, uncirculated and proof editions have also been released in glorious detail for the enjoyment of collectors.
If you are not sure what finish your American Eagles coin holds - don't worry - our experts will identify this for you and price your coin accordingly. Be wary of gold dealers paying a flat rate for gold coinage, regardless of if the piece is intended for collectors or the bullion market!
Is Your Coin An American Eagle?
A select few designs are present on American Eagles, meaning telling if your coin is one such example can be done in a glance. The obverse side (where the portrait of a monarch is found on UK coins) holds a majestic design first sculpted in 1907: Augustus Saint-Gaudens' standing Lady Liberty. On the reverse is situated the bird of prey that gives this series its namesake, present in two designs depending on your coin's year.
1oz Gold Eagle coins from 1986 - 2021 will bear the eagle and eaglet pairing by Miley Busiek, depicting the parent swooping into its nest while carrying an olive branch. Most American Eagle coins will feature this design due to its long mintage period. However, partially in 2021 and fully since, later editions hold the viewer's gaze as their eyes are met with Jennie Norris' eagle head design.
It is no reason to be concerned if your 1oz gold coin holds one design or the other; the intrinsic gold value remains the same regardless of the artistry on show.
