The Una and the Lion bullion series honours one of the most iconic motifs ever engraved by The Royal Mint's master engraver, William Wyon. Originally created for the 1839 five-pound coin to commemorate Queen Victoria's early reign, the design depicts Princess Una guiding her guardian lion - a visual allegory of wisdom, courage, and moral strength drawn from Edmund Spenser's 16th-century epic The Faerie Queene.
This modern Edition II bullion bar, designed by Thomas T. Docherty, continues that tradition with a new interpretation of the scene. Una, graceful and resolute, walks beside a lion poised mid-stride, symbolising the harmony between virtue and power. Beneath the design appears the Latin inscription:
"DIRIGE DEUS GRESSUS MEOS" - translated as "May God direct my steps".
The reverse bears The Royal Mint logo and inscriptions denoting weight and purity:
1 oz 999.9 FINE GOLD.
Each bar contains 31.103 grams of 24-carat (999.9 fine) gold and is sealed in a tamper-evident assay blister pack that incorporates a unique serial number, verifying its authenticity and traceability.
