Product Description
Few coins in history have travelled as far and wide as the Maria Theresa Thaler. First minted in the 1740s and officially frozen at the date 1780 following the Empress's death, these silver trade coins became an international standard of trust. Carried across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and beyond, they were so highly regarded that multiple nations struck their own versions to meet demand.
Each coin is made from 28 grams of .833 fine silver, with a net silver content of 23.3 grams (0.752 troy ounces). The obverse features a right-facing portrait of Empress Maria Theresa, the only female ruler of the Habsburg Empire, surrounded by her Latin titles. The reverse displays the double-headed eagle of Austria, bearing the imperial arms. Around the edge is the Latin motto Iustitia et Clementia - "Justice and Clemency".
Coins are pre-owned and may show small knocks, scratches or toning typical of circulation or storage, but every piece is guaranteed genuine and tested for authenticity.

Denomination Information
The Maria Theresa Thaler was first issued during the reign of Empress Maria Theresa (1740–1780). Known for her political reforms and leadership of the Habsburg Empire, she became the only woman to rule Austria in her own right. The Thaler minted in her honour became so respected as a trade coin that it continued to be struck long after her death.
It is estimated that hundreds of millions of these coins have been produced since the 18th century, at mints across Europe, the Middle East and even India. Their reliability made them a currency of choice in markets stretching from Africa to Arabia. The fact that all restrikes continue to carry the frozen year 1780 is a direct nod to this legacy, ensuring continuity and recognisability in global trade.
