About this product
SHIPPING EXPECTED TO COMMENCE FROM 17 NOV: The 2026 Gold Sovereign marks the return of Britain's most famous coin in its classic yellow-gold form. For over two decades, Sovereigns carried a warmer, rose-coloured alloy, but that era now closes. The forthcoming 2026 issue restores the traditional golden hue that defined the series for centuries - the colour most collectors instinctively associate with The Sovereign. Struck by The Royal Mint, this latest release also introduces two innovative security features, making it not only beautiful but technologically advanced. Expected for release in late 2025, it continues a lineage that stretches back more than 200 years.

For generations, the Gold Sovereign has been the benchmark of British minting - a coin that embodies reliability, heritage, and artistry. The 2026 bullion edition maintains that tradition while quietly rewriting a little history of its own.
According to the Royal Proclamation published in The Gazette (Notice 4874355), the new Sovereign will retain its time-honoured dimensions and composition: 22 carat gold, 22.05 mm diameter, and 7.98 grams in weight. Yet, beneath these familiar numbers lies meaningful change. For the first time in decades, the Sovereign will be minted using a subtly rebalanced alloy - one that restores silver to the mix, giving each coin a richer, yellow-gold lustre reminiscent of Victorian and Edwardian issues.
That decision reconnects the modern Sovereign to its 19th-century heritage, aligning with collector sentiment that long favoured the traditional tone. It also marks the end of the "rose-gold" era, which began around 2000 when copper dominated the alloy blend.
The 2026 design also carries new technical refinements. Following the Royal Proclamation, each coin will feature a latent image on the obverse - a shifting visual device similar to the optical features used on The Royal Mint's Britannia range - and microtext on the reverse, reading HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE, the motto of the Order of the Garter. Together, these elements bring enhanced protection against counterfeiting without altering the coin's timeless aesthetic.
The obverse presents Martin Jennings' official effigy of King Charles III, accompanied by the inscription "CHARLES III · DEI · GRA · REX · FID · DEF". The reverse restores Benedetto Pistrucci's legendary depiction of St George and the Dragon, a design that has graced Sovereigns for more than two centuries and continues to symbolise courage and renewal.
Each coin will be struck to a bullion finish, supplied in coin flips, as is standard for Sovereigns intended for investment. Coins ordered in multiples of 25 will be supplied in Royal Mint tubes, and orders of 500 in sealed boxes.
For investors, it's a reassuringly familiar proposition - VAT-free, CGT-exempt, globally recognised, and liquid. For collectors, it's a milestone issue: the first yellow-gold Sovereign of the reign of Charles III and the first ever to feature embedded anti-counterfeiting technology.

The 2026 Gold Sovereign Bullion Coin is both VAT-free and Capital Gains Tax exempt in the UK, as it qualifies as legal-tender British currency. Its intrinsic gold value, worldwide recognition, and divisibility make it a cornerstone holding for many investors.
While many choose Sovereigns for long-term wealth preservation, market conditions can fluctuate, and values may rise or fall. Gold Traders does not provide financial advice; we always encourage customers to carry out independent research before committing to any investment decision.
The British Sovereign has existed in many forms since its debut under King Henry VII in 1489, though the coin we know today originates from the great recoinage of 1817. Designed by Benedetto Pistrucci, the striking image of St George slaying the dragon became an emblem of modern Britain - a fusion of myth, artistry, and national pride.
Through centuries of monarchs and political change, the Sovereign has remained constant: 22-carat gold, precisely struck, instantly recognisable across the world. The 2026 issue continues that continuity, uniting ancient symbolism with twenty-first-century minting precision. It is at once familiar and new - a reaffirmation of The Royal Mint's enduring craftsmanship.
