Product Description

Britannia coins have been a mainstay of British bullion since 1987. Each year brings another opportunity for investors to add these trusted coins to their portfolios, and the 2026 edition is no exception.

Each coin contains 31.1 grams (1 troy ounce) of 24-carat, 999.9 fine gold, struck to a bullion finish. On the reverse, Philip Nathan's iconic standing Britannia design is complemented by four high-tech security features first introduced in 2021:

  • Latent image that shifts between Britannia’s trident and a padlock.
  • Surface animation in the background wave pattern creates a lifelike sense of movement.
  • Micro-text border, carrying the Latin motto Decus et Tutamen ('an ornament and a safeguard').
  • Tincture lines enhancing the Union flag on Britannia's shield.

The obverse features Martin Jennings' uncrowned portrait of King Charles III and the coin's denomination of £100.

Supplied individually in protective slips, coins are also available in larger quantities:

  • 10 coins supplied in original tubes from The Royal Mint.
  • 100 coins supplied in a sealed 'monster box'.

Whether buying a single piece as a long-term store of value or bulk ordering for portfolio building, the Britannia is one of the most efficient ways to invest in physical gold.

Investing Information

The 2026 1oz Gold Britannia is both VAT-free and Capital Gains Tax exempt, offering two significant tax advantages for UK investors. This exemption applies because Britannia coins are classed as legal tender in the United Kingdom.

For many investors, this makes Britannias more attractive than other international bullion coins, such as Krugerrands or American Eagles, which do not enjoy the same CGT-free status. The strong secondary market for Britannias also ensures excellent liquidity if you decide to sell in future.

As always, while we can share factual details about tax treatment, we cannot offer individual financial advice. Please do your own research and seek professional guidance if needed before making an investment decision.

Denomination Information

The Gold Britannia was first introduced in 1987, offering a distinctly British counterpart to other one-ounce bullion coins. Initially minted in 22-carat gold, the series transitioned in 2013 to a 24-carat, 999.9 fineness. Since then, Britannias have become a benchmark for quality and trust in the bullion world.

Britannia herself is a symbol that dates back nearly two millennia, first appearing on Roman coins and later revived under Charles II. Philip Nathan's acclaimed design, chosen for the first issue in 1987, depicts her as both protective and powerful - a personification of Britain's strength and resilience.

Today, Britannia remains one of the most secure bullion coins available, blending history and tradition with cutting-edge innovation.
